Recently, I was given Propofol (Michael Jackson's Med) during a Colonoscopy and when I woke up in the Hospital Recovery Room, I had a runny nose. Additionally, I noticed that my face was very red around in the area around my nose. That night, I had a really terrible headache (probably the Propofol) until I finally took some Tylenol. But 48 hours later, I was still sneezing and had that runny nose. Despite several sinus washes per day (using my Netti Pot) I was still very uncomfortable.
When I finally called the doctor, he told me that it was caused by the the unfiltered oxygen that was used in the tubes of my nose. I don't recollect having this issue during my first Colonoscopy. I will say that the runny nose was probably worse than the Gatorade and Pre-Colonoscopy Colon Cleanse. At least with the Colon Cleanse, I saw the benefit in shedding a few pounds. There is no benefit to a runny nose.
The next time I am in the Hospital and they ask me if I had any allergies, I am going to tell them about the 48+ Hour Runny Nose. We'll see if they do things differently.
Unfortunately, with today's medical care, a patient must sometimes be his or her own quarterback.
